Client Brief

A UK-based client required a custom-designed Main Distribution Unit (MDU) to support new infrastructure at an outdoor site. The unit needed to be weatherproof, lockable, compliant with site-specific specifications, and built within a tight timeframe. This was the first of two MDUs required for the full project rollout.

Our Solution

NKD Group designed, built, and delivered a fully bespoke 630A Freestanding MDU Pillar that was tailored to the client’s needs and environmental conditions.

Technical Specifications:

Rating: 630A
Design: Freestanding, bolt-down pillar
Outdoor Rating: Weatherproof with lockable doors
Incoming Supply: 4-pole isolator
Outgoing Feeders:
- 8 x 4-pole 125A NSX breakers
- Each equipped with Micrologic 5.2 trip units for advanced protection and monitoring
Cable Entry: Bottom entry with gland plate (minimum 300mm from base)
Finish: Custom-painted in Green 14-C-39 to match site aesthetic and planning conditions

Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Custom Paint Requirement: We matched the client’s specification using the British Standard BS4800 colour code, ensuring compliance with local visual planning requirements.
Outdoor Environment: Built to withstand harsh weather, the MDU included IP-rated construction and corrosion-resistant materials.
Rapid Turnaround: Leveraging in-house stock and design capability, we manufactured and delivered the unit on schedule without compromising build quality.

Project Outcome

The MDU was successfully delivered and installed with zero on-site modifications required — a testament to our precise design process and client collaboration. The unit is now in service and supports mission-critical electrical infrastructure with high levels of protection, monitoring, and reliability.

This is the first of two MDUs for this site, with the second unit already in progress.
